Buying a Pet 

Are you interested in buying a pet?  What kind of pet should you buy?  If you want a pet that you can play with, buy a dog.  Dogs make wonderful pets.  They are affectionate and playful animals and they can even protect your house.

If you want a quieter animal that will cuddle with you on the sofa while you watch TV, buy a cat.  Cats are clean animals and you don't need to take them out for a walk like you do for a dog.

If you're allergic to animal hair or you live in a smaller place, try a small caged animal such as a hamster.  Hamsters are easy to care for and they won't wake the neighbors.  Mice and guinea pigs are other small caged animals that are very popular. 

Birds also make great pets.  A bird cage can fit even in the smallest of apartments.  They can wake you up in the morning with their beautiful song.  

Want a pet that requires very little care, is small, and is very quiet?  Try buying a fish.  Watching fish swim around in an aquarium is very relaxing.

Pets can bring a lot of happiness into your life but remember that having a pet is a big responsibility.  Make sure that the pet fits into your lifestyle.  If you love and care for them, they will give you their affection in return.  

Exercise.

Write full sentences using superlative adjectives. Then, write 4 full sentences using comparatives and the same adjectives.

Forming Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

One-syllable adjectives.

Form the comparative and superlative forms of a one-syllable adjective by adding –er for the comparative form and –est for the superlative.

• Mary is taller than Max.
• Mary is the tallest of all the students.
• Max is older than John.
• Of the three students, Max is the oldest.

If the one-syllable adjective ends with an e, just add –r for the comparative form and –st for the superlative form.

If the one-syllable adjective ends with a single consonant with a vowel before it, double the consonant and add –er for the comparative form; and double the consonant and add –est for the superlative form.

Two-syllable adjectives.

With most two-syllable adjectives, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.

• This morning is more peaceful than yesterday morning.

• Jill is more thoughtful than your sister.
• Mary is the most thoughtful person I've ever met.

If the two-syllable adjectives ends with –y, change the y to i and add –er for the comparative form. For the superlative form change the y to i and add –est.

Two-syllable adjectives ending in –er, -le, or –ow take –er and –est to form the comparative and superlative forms.

• The roads in this town are narrower than the roads in the city.

Adjectives with three or more syllables.

For adjectives with three syllables or more, you form the comparative with more and the superlative with most.

• John is more generous than Jack.

Reading Food Labels

Look for the “Nutrition Facts” label on packaged foods. Reading labels is a big step toward eating healthier. The tips below help you know what to look for.

1. Serving SizeRead this closely. This is how to measure 1 serving of the food in the package. If you eat more than 1 serving, you get more of everything on the label—including fat, cholesterol, and calories.
2. Total FatThis tells you how many grams (g) of fat are in 1 serving. Fat is high in calories. A healthy goal is to have less than 25% of your daily calories come from fat.
3. Saturated FatThis tells you how much saturated fat is in 1 serving. Saturated fat raises your cholesterol the most. Look for foods that have little or no saturated fat.
4. Trans FatThis tells you how much trans fat is in 1 serving. Even a small amount of trans fat can harm your health. Choose foods that have no trans fat.
5. CholesterolThis tells you how much cholesterol is in 1 serving. Try to eat less than 300 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol a day.
6. Calories from FatThis number tells you how many calories from fat are in 1 serving (there are 9 calories per gram of fat). Look for foods with few calories from fat.
7. % Daily ValueThe higher the number, the more 1 serving has of that nutrient. Look for foods that have low numbers for total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.
8. SodiumThis tells you how much sodium (salt) is in 1 serving. Choose foods with low numbers for sodium.
9. Dietary FiberThis number tells you how much fiber is in 1 serving. Foods that are high in fiber can help you feel full. They can also be good for your heart and digestion. Try to get about 25 grams a day.
